Puffy Coat DOTS

Recycled, warm, water resistant, puffy, spectacular. What else to say about the Dot Puffy Coat except “MUST HAVE”? The Puffy Dot Coat has serious Japanese influence. Simple, elegant, no unnecessary parts. No angry corners.

Gradient sizes of clear dots on an exterior ‘coal’ colour field and ‘heart’ big dots on a white colour field interior, ‘heart’ or ‘coal’ silk collar (you choose)). Leonardo spine down the lining back where we are all the same; a talisman of strength.

A dot is complete and self contained. It is its own world and yet, in groups it becomes an infinitesimal part of the fluid fractals in a molecular world; all one together. Cuddly, washable, two ties and you are off.

Double your dot quotient by pairing your Dot Puffy coat with a pair of Dahlia Drive Dot Piano Pants. How about red tights under that? Outrageous.

Dots are my Mom. I have an old picture of her in a white dress with black polka Dots. Yum. My dog Chucky thought so too and chewed the edges of the photo. Mom is still there.

The Puffy Dot Coat is my homage to dots. The layering of a clear resist onto the painted ‘coal’ dye paper allows the dots to be influenced by its base colour. As with anything with history, each layer informs the other, altering connection, reception and result. I love the organic results from this process.

The exterior, interior and puffy coat materials are made from recycled, waterproof polyester. All are bought white, cut to shape. The lining and exterior are printed with paper painted and/or printed with dye. The Leonardo spine is added (including his mirror image Italian script). The paper is pinned to each cut piece and heat pressed to transfer the dye. The collar is cut from found silk yardage which has been dyed red ‘heart’ or black ’coal’. A sandwich is made with the puffy material in the middle and pinned carefully in order to sashiko stitch the puffy panels every 5 inches (the collar much closer). Then the pieces are bound with tape and flat seamed together. It is sewn to be reversible but there is no pocket on the inside (we tried and it was too bulky).

After the materials are gathered, it takes 50 hours to build. Send it to China for cheap labour? Not a chance. This is a labour of love, not manufacturing. I am eternally grateful I can make that choice. I am eternally grateful if you, too, can make the choice to purchase one.

The coat is made to order and will take up to 2 months to build and finish.

It is very warm! Pair with gloves to the elbow and an infinity scarf in the winter. Wash by hand and hang dry.
