Hawíit, xyáahl hlaa! Come on, dance!
The Raven Kimono is a cursory nod to the traditional Japanese kimono esthetic. The back is shape fitted yet the front can hang loose, (a column of elegance), tied in front (a bow of delight) or wrapped back (sleek and active). The Kimono is the most versatile of all Yáahl, G̱úud,Tsai structures. A quick piece to dramatize a simple dress, give class to jeans, cover arms in the sun. Washable, dryable, packable, uncreasable. Made from discarded curtain sheer roll ends.
Travel! Háaníisgwáa! Yáahl X̱yáalas Raven Dancing flies into view from behind you, then over your head and across your front in search of the sun. Onto a folded blank kimono, the screened Yáahl X̱yáalas is strategically placed to tell this story; pinned in placed with a k’úuk/heart dot and heat set. Unwrapped, the echo of Yáahl’s journey is layered throughout the folded structure. You become the earth Yáahl orbits.
“Haida Art stems from Haida life, past and present. Haida Art is the visual companion to the Haida language, both of which are born from our inextricable connection to the lands, waters and supernatural beings of Haida Gwaii. Together they represent who we are- they are our identity.” Ernie Wilson Niis Wes Gak’yaals ḵ’iigawaay Raven Travelling: Two Centuries of Haida Art” VAG
