G̱úud Eagle Smock

The Smock, with its delicate triple collar, is simple, elegant and light. One button and you are ready to go. From the front, your silhouette can be seen through the printed scrim of hlG̱áhl/black brush strokes and resisted moons; a mysterious vision in the night sky. On the back, G̱úud Gúujaawée, Eagle Drum is printed with the sun (k'úuk/heart dot) reflected in the sky. As the smock swings, the pleat responds and Eagle Drum plays. Colour as shown.

Nang jáadaas ñ’uláagang. The woman is the boss. Whether sleeveless in summer or long sleeves with leather high boots in winter, the Smock is ready for any season. Travels light and small, does not wrinkle.

The Smock is sewn first. As a blank canvas, it is laid on the painted canvas of G̱úud Gúujaawée and the k’úuk/heart dot. The painting is pinned in place and covered with a ‘star’ stroke painting in hlG̱áhl/black and 3 clear dots.

Heat set, the pleat becomes permanent, the sun travels through your heart to the front and is reflected in one ‘moon’. The final element in the Smock sculpture is you. The design comes alive only when worn. Polyester, upcycled material, wash, dry, no iron. Sewn in Vancouver, printed in Powell River

“In our language, as in many indigenous languages, there is no word for ‘art’ because it cannot be separated from our way of life.” GwaaGanad, Diane Brown “Raven Travelling: Two Centuries of Haida Art” VAG
